The Complete History of the Normans with Eleanor Janega

The video runs for approximately 50 minutes. This film is presented by Eleanor Janega, a medieval history scholar at the University of Cambridge, and it traces the complete journey of the Normans from Scandinavian Viking raiders to becoming the most powerful royal families in medieval Europe. In 911, Viking leader Rollo led his men to land at the mouth of the Seine River in France, gaining land in exchange for submission, thus laying the foundation for the Duchy of Normandy. Subsequently, the Normans absorbed French culture, blending cavalry tactics with feudalism, and gradually rose to prominence—their conquest of England in 1066, the establishment of the Kingdom of Sicily in southern Italy, and their profound impact on the Crusades. The film's core focus is on revealing the fluidity of the "Norman identity": they were both descendants of the Vikings, Frankish nobles, and a trans-Mediterranean political force. The scholar supports the narrative with solid historical evidence, challenging the common stereotype of the Normans as "barbarians." This film is suitable for history enthusiasts, those interested in medieval Europe, and anyone looking to understand the background of the 1066 English conquest. It is recommended to watch it with a map to help understand the expansion轨迹 of Norman power in Europe and the Mediterranean.
