The Submarine That Sank a Warship… Then Vanished #history #historydocumentary #americanhistory

Total runtime: approximately 50 minutes. We recommend planning your viewing time accordingly. On the night of February 17, 1864, during the American Civil War, eight Confederate sailors crawled into a strangely shaped wooden submarine—this was the "H.L. Hunley," one of the most legendary vessels in military history. Centered on this submarine, the film recounts how, in a single night, it succeeded in sinking the Union warship Housatonic, creating the first recorded submarine annihilation in naval warfare history. Yet the highly decorated Hunley disappeared en route back to port, sinking to the ocean floor along with its eight crew members—becoming an unsolved mystery for over a century. The core appeal lies in the rare combination of historical footage reconstruction and exploration of the submarine's wreckage. The camera dives into the waters off Charleston Harbor, recreating how this "biting little tuna" relied on human-powered crank propulsion to challenge an ironclad warship in a daring and harrowing clash. Recommended for viewers interested in Civil War history, the evolution of military technology, and cold-case mysteries, as well as fans of true historical suspense.
