Patrice Lumumba: Africa's Most Dangerous Man | A Bedtime History Doc

The total runtime is approximately one hour, so we recommend setting aside an uninterrupted block of time to watch it in full. This documentary focuses on the life and tragic fate of Patrice Lumumba, the Congo's first democratically elected Prime Minister. In 1960, Lumumba led the Congo to independence from Belgian colonial rule, but just two months into his tenure he was overthrown in a coup and assassinated. His death was far more than a simple case of internal power struggle; it was the result of a complex web of maneuvering among the American CIA, Belgian colonial interests, and other actors in the context of the Cold War, driven by competition over resources and geopolitical maneuvering. Through archival materials and analysis from historians, the documentary portrays how this politician—dubbed "the most dangerous man in Africa"—ignited a wave of liberation movements across the continent with his brief but impactful life. The narrative does not shy away from the complexities of colonial history, nor does it deify Lumumba; instead, it traces the truth with a calm and restrained hand. Suitable for viewers interested in modern African history, post-colonial politics, and Cold War international relations. We recommend watching alongside relevant historical materials for a deeper understanding of this continent's turning points.
